Are You Playing Enough?

Playing in my backyard - snowshoeingAre you playing enough? It’s worth it! My body, mind, and spirit are just buzzing from the natural high of doing something I love – something I hadn’t done in years.  Snowshoeing!

As you read this, pay attention to what comes to mind for you. What kinds of play did you love when you were younger and haven’t done in years? Bringing some of those back into your life can do wonders!

We’d had a huge snowfall overnight. It got me so excited. Sure, I had work to do. But I’d promised myself to play more this year.

I didn’t play much last year as I was “too busy” building my website and doing B-School.  I had a lot of studio time, which is always fun, but that’s still work-related.

So when I created my 2016 intuitive vision board, it was filled with soul promptings like “Embrace the Canadian Winter”, “Skate the Loop This Winter”, and “Be a Tourist in Your Own Town” (click here to learn how to make yours).

Vision boards work.  Right before New Years, I went to a movie with my friend Leslie. She had a pile of stuff in her car to drop off at a thrift store, including a pair of snowshoes and poles. So I took those home!

I used to love snowshoeing. I mean really love it!  My old-fashioned wood & sinew pair didn’t make the move to Newfoundland in 2011, when I’d reduced my belongings to just a few boxes.

Now I have new ones – the modern kind. Two days before this snowfall, I’d tried them out in the backyard. There wasn’t much snow, but enough to test the toe grips and poles that had never been a part of my snowshoeing history.

After circling outside the backdoor for a while, I stood at the top of my neighbour’s hill for a good 5 minutes before having the guts to head down. Poles are great! So are toe grips!

I’ve only been down to the river a few times since I moved in 1.5 years ago. I’d originally thought I’d start my days there with water ceremonies and nature contemplation. But I came back from my first trek through the tall weeds with a rash that burned for days.  So I’ve been enjoying the river from the house instead.

With the snow, however, I could make it all the way down the hill and along the river for 11 houses to an intersecting creek.  I felt like an explorer! I stopped and had a lovely chat with a neighbour across the river who came to see what his dog was barking at. Then I marvelled at all the birds and ice-laced rivulets.  I was in total bliss.

I made it back up to my yard and sat there to enjoy my high. I thought the only thing that could make it better was playing with my neighbours’ dogs. So I went to get them and play we did. I rolled around on the ground like a kid and threw sticks for them to fetch. I felt so happy! This was my first winter play session in a couple of years!

So after our huge snowfall, it only took a glance at my vision board to get me out the door again. My work could wait.

I’m so glad I’d explored the territory before though. The light fluffy snow was up to my knees in most places.  But when I’d inadvertently walk over hidden bushes or boulders, I’d slide down or cave in to my waist.  I tell ya – poles are great!  The grips didn’t do much in these conditions though.

At one point, a duck came and landed a few feet from me,  disappearing in the snow. Then her head poked up to look at me. When she realized I hadn’t brought any seed, she waddled her way a bit below eyesight before taking flight again.

This backyard adventure was just as great as the first one!

At one point, I lay down and made a snow angel, closing my eyes and letting the snowflakes melt on my face. I was filled with gratitude – for nature in the backyard, my flexible entrepreneur schedule, the home I share with my housemate, my new snowshoes, my body, and so much more.

I’m so glad my intuitive vision board reminded me of how important it is to play and do things I love. My whole being vibrated with joy.

IMG_9978The next day, I went skating at The Loop in downtown St. John’s for the first time ever before having dinner with my friends Kim and Daryl.  I hadn’t skated in about 5 years! More fun! More gratitude! More health & happiness!

Follow your bliss – that’s the key to the Law of Attraction.

Abundance – What My Guides Had to Say

November-2015-Vision-Board

Have you ever done an Intuitive Vision Board? They’re a fun and easy way to tap into your guidance. I did one on abundance on Sunday. Now I’ve got 2 clear areas to focus on for the next few months.

Step 1: Asking
After preparing myself and the space, I asked for Guidance.

The question I wrote on the back of my new board is “How do I welcome more financial abundance?

As you know, I’m nearing the end of my first year as a full-time arts entrepreneur after nearly 30 years of doing it part-time. It’s been an amazing year with the creation of my website/online shop and the Universal Law Mandalas. But I need more income if I want to remain a full-time artist.

Step 2: Receiving

I then put the timer on for 20 minutes and started tearing words and pictures out of magazines without thinking. I simply tuned into what appealed to me.

Step 3: Interpreting

When the 20 minutes was up, I started cutting the pieces and arranging my board while reflecting on the meaning of the messages.

Here’s what I got:

Keep Doing the Inner Work

  • focus on my vision
  • go back to my paraliminal CDs to realign my mindset around abundance and success
  • practice thought awareness
  • make sure I go to bed with happy thoughts so I can wake up the same way
  • live in the moment
  • keep being open to inspiration and appreciation for life’s small and big wonders
  • spend time visualizing the end feeling and the pleasure of the journey
  • have faith in outside the box business
  • take time in nature for that body-mind-spirit connection

Keep Doing the Outer Work:

  • Look for outside opportunities to share my unique art & inspiration
  • let people know the value of my work
  • write news releases
  • contribute to magazines and blogs
  • think 3-year plan with room for flexibility – set goals

What a great 1-hour business coaching session with my Guides / intuition.

There’s a whole lot more to being a full-time artist than creating the art. Now my right/intuitive brain and my left/action brain have their work to do.

I’m curious … this is the second board “Ireland” appears on this year. I wonder if I’ll be taking my mandalas there?!

Your Guide to Intuitive Vision Boards – 7 Easy Steps

2015-Vision-Board

Do you want to connect to your Higher Self Guidance?

Are you looking for a way to include the sacred in your day?

Would you love a meaningful activity to do on your own or with friends?

You’ll love vision boards.  They’re easy and fun and take little planning, especially if you choose my favourite kind: the intuitive vision board.

What Is It?

It’s a spontaneous tool to tap into your intuition for guidance, direction, manifestation, and fun!

It’s a way to actively engage with your Higher Self to find answers to a question that’s important in your life.

Materials Needed Per Participant

  • a pile of magazines (5-10 each – ask around for contributions)
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 glue stick
  • 1 poster board (usually 50 cents at dollar stores).
  • markers, stickers to decorate (optional)

7 Easy Steps To Creating Your Intuitive Vision Board

  1. Choose a clear open question to focus on (e.g. “What is in my Highest Interest for the next year”, “What do I need to get ready for my time overseas”, etc.).  Write it on the back of your poster board.
  2. Do something to ground and connect:  I get my groups to dance/move to a song without words to help them become present in their bodies and in the moment while formulating their question.
  3. Put a timer on for 20 minutes and quickly tear out as many pictures/words that attract you, exchanging magazine piles as you go – don’t judge or analyze. The time pressure is to help the right brain (intuition) lead and not give the left brain a chance to kick in.  Work fast!
  4. Then, take about an hour to cut and place your images/words while listening for messages /answers from your Higher Self about your choices of pictures and words.Everyone’s will look different – clean and orderly, or messy – it doesn’t matter. Do this quietly – allow others to dive into their own process. You may not understand all the guidance now – it will reveal itself with time as you look at your board daily or as something happens in your life to reveal why your intuition guided you to include it.
  5. Journal about it (like a letter from your Higher Self, God, etc. – “Dear _____________, …..”
  6. Share your insights with someone. More stuff will come up and their questions may help you focus on things you may have overlooked.
  7. Hang it where you see it every day and let it continue to guide you!

Intuitive Vision Boards are not only a visual representation of your inner guidance, but also a highly practical manifestation tool.

Here are a few examples:

– Years ago, my intuitive vision board helped me decide to invest in camera equipment and take a photography workshop in New Brunswick with masters I had long admired – an amazing summer fun experience that fully satisfied my creative and inner child needs!  If I remember well, one of the leaders had actually written the article “Speaking to the Eyes of the Heart”, whose title I had used.

Some of the pieces below encouraged me to sign-up for another life changing event in my life – Flora Bowley’s 5-week online intuitive painting course called Bloom True.   I had no idea that I was going to study art again when I chose those images. I didn’t think I could manage it while teaching 2 ESL classes at university, but it reminded me to make time for myself as well.

The other pieces of my January 2013 board were instrumental in my going to study in Vienna for a year.  The one with the pelicans taking flight with the words “Now I invent instead of predict; I am a visionary” held absolutely no meaning for me when I made the board.  The expression “visionary art” wasn’t one I was very familiar with at the time.  But when I later received intuitive guidance to go to the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art, I looked up and saw those words, which served as the first confirming sign to what became a blessed decision in my life.  The fact that the school had a loving approach to art education certainly meshed with the second piece I’m showing here.

I have countless other examples, but you get the idea.

As for all intuitive tools, the images and words you choose have meaning for you, and perhaps only you.

Have confidence in your own interpretations and stay open to the mystery if they don’t speak to you past the moment when your heart exclaimed “tear this out of the magazine and add it to your vision board”.

Other Kinds of Vision Boards

There are lots of other kinds of vision board.  Two others that I’ve done in the past are:

  • Wish boards:  collect images as you go through your days and paste them up on a bulletin board as you go, or collect them in a file and make a poster once in a while.
  • Whole Self Intention Boards:  Make a poster with words to remind you of your intentions for the year. Divide your Board into emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental aspects of your life. Consider your Inner World and Outer world (environment, relationships, community).  Such boards
    • helped me make major decisions
    • reminded me to use the tools at my disposal to reach my goals
    • ensured that I maintained balance through intense times
    • and visually assisted me to live my life in line with my life purpose.

When To Do Them?

There’s no bad time for vision boards.

My preference is at at transition times such as Solstice, New Year’s Day, Summer Equinox, etc.

Some years, I’ve needed quite a few. Others, I’ve only made one.

When I’m on the road, I use my digital images and make one for my computer desktop so that I can see it whenever I boot it up. There are also online tools you can use such as Design Wizard with its own library of images for you to use.

There are all sorts of ways and times to do these.  Have fun exploring and expressing!
