Balanced in Light
Every year, the Summer Solstice invites me to pause and create something that honours the light.
This year’s painting had its own timing. I began laying the vibrant mark-making layers over a week earlier.
Then, as the Summer Solstice approached, this painting called me back into co-creation. I spent Saturday afternoon immersed in her, painting the luminous geometry late into the night until 1 a.m. as the solstice arrived, returning again the following day to bring her to completion.
It felt as though she wanted to be born with the light.
Only afterwards did I discover that the Summer Solstice also coincided with International Yoga Day. Suddenly, everything made even more sense.
The central figure is inspired by Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)—one of yoga’s most recognizable postures.
On the surface, it’s a pose of balance. Yet anyone who’s practised it knows that balance isn’t about becoming perfectly still. It’s a continual conversation between grounding and reaching, stability and subtle movement. Every tiny adjustment is part of the pose.
It’s a pose of dynamic stillness.
Perhaps life is like that too.
Behind the figure lies the Armature of the Rectangle, a timeless compositional framework that artists have used for centuries to create harmony and proportion.
Here, its vibrant geometry becomes an expression of light itself. The intersecting lines and colours evoke the many directions of light and energy that surround us—dynamic, expansive and alive.
Yet within that colourful movement, the figure remains calm and centred.
That contrast reminds me that even amidst life’s complexity and constant motion, it’s possible to find an inner stillness.
Within the figure, the vibrant chakras express our energetic centres – alignment along the energetic spine.
Tiger’s Eye anchors the base, symbolising grounding, courage and presence.
At the crown, Amethyst represents intuition, wisdom and our connection to something greater than ourselves.
Together they create a visual journey from earth to sky—from rootedness to illumination.
As I reflected on the finished painting, the title revealed itself.
Balanced in Light
Not simply balanced, but balanced in the Light.
To me, that light is both literal and symbolic. The Summer Solstice brings us the longest day of the year, inviting us to celebrate warmth, abundance and the fullness of life. Yet it also reminds us of another light—the quiet radiance that lives within each of us. A light that doesn’t depend on the season, yet somehow becomes easier to remember when the world itself is shining.
As I painted, I realized this was becoming more than a yoga pose or an exploration of sacred geometry. It became a meditation on living with an open heart, finding harmony amidst change, and allowing ourselves to stand confidently in our own light.
Like a tree, we’re never balancing in isolation. We’re continually responding to the unseen currents around us while remaining rooted in what matters most. This is a living practice—one breath, one choice, one moment at a time. Every time we find our centre, we’re really beginning again.
It seems beautifully fitting that this painting was completed as the Summer Solstice and International Yoga Day met on the same day—a celebration of light, presence and the timeless practice of finding balance.
Although the longest day has passed, may its message remain with us.
May you continue to find moments of stillness within movement.
May you remain grounded and connected, aligned with your deepest self, and balanced in the light that has always shone within you.
