Hope’s Herald: A Bluebird’s Message of Hope and Joy
Hope’s Herald is the second angel painting in a pair inspired by my photo walk through Beechwood National Cemetery before a cinema pop-up event.
The first angel painting was Soul’s Journey, in which the angel is holding a labyrinth.
As I photographed this monument during my walk, I was drawn not only to the beauty of the sculpture, but to the tenderness of the moment captured in stone.
There, she wasn’t holding anything. The bluebird came later — not from the monument itself, but through the intuitive unfolding of the painting process.
As I was sketching the stencil, I remembered the bluebird in a client’s Divine Storytelling Time intuitive reading that I had created earlier that week.
I had felt such joy seeing the bluebird fly towards me in the vision. And so, it found its way here too.
The angel cradles the bluebird with such love, gentleness, and protection. There is something deeply moving about the way she holds this tiny messenger, as though she is whispering something into its ear before sending it onward.
I found myself wondering: What message is she giving this little bird to carry?
The Symbolism of the Bluebird

Across cultures and through folklore, the bluebird has long been associated with happiness, joy, renewal, and hope. The familiar phrase “bluebird of happiness” reflects a collective understanding of this beautiful little bird as a symbol of optimism, lightness, and the possibility of brighter days.
In Hope’s Herald, the bluebird feels like a gentle messenger of hope — a reminder that even in the midst of challenges and uncertainty, beauty, joy, and grace can still find their way to us.
The angel’s loving embrace adds another layer of meaning. She is not simply holding a bird; she is protecting and nurturing a message. The tenderness of her gesture speaks of compassion, reassurance, and the quiet presence of love that accompanies us along our journey.
Hope as a Way of Being
The bluebird also reminds me of a teaching I have encountered through the yogic path: that joy is not only something that comes after circumstances improve, but something we can cultivate within ourselves — a compass on our path.
The phrase that stayed with me was this: joy is the solution, not the reward.
Inner joy is not merely the result of a joyful life; it can become the foundation from which we move through life’s challenges.
For me, this is deeply connected to hope. Hope isn’t a feeling that arrives once everything is resolved. Sometimes hope is the quiet choice to remain open — to continue trusting, loving, and noticing the small moments of beauty along the way.
This very much accompanies my belief that challenges can happen for us, not to us.
All of these beliefs and symbols accompanied me during my intensive painting week as I moved through an unexpected challenge. Being in the flow of creativity helped me stay grounded and present, rather than being pulled into fearful thoughts.
Carrying the Message Forward
Perhaps part of the wisdom of Hope’s Herald is that hope is something we receive, but also something we share. A small gesture of kindness, a moment of beauty, a word of encouragement, or a simple reminder that we are not alone can become a messenger of hope for someone else.
May this painting be a reminder to listen for the quiet messages of the heart and to remain open to the bluebirds of hope & happiness that appear along our path.
