The Inner Sanctum Drum

The Inner Sanctum Drum began with a vision I received in meditation: a woman curled up at the very heart of a lotus, holding herself gently.

The image felt immediately clear. She wasn’t hiding. She was turning inward—to rest, to listen, and to reconnect with the sacred place within herself.

It reminded me very much of Flower Child, the self-care painting I created in 2014. There, a woman rests at the heart of a sunflower. Here, she is cocooned within a lotus.

The lotus is one of the great spiritual symbols of transformation. Rooted in mud, it rises through murky water before opening into extraordinary beauty.

For me, it speaks to one of life’s most profound possibilities:

Beauty out of mud.
Sacred out of chaos.
Love out of fear.

At the centre of this lotus is the woman herself. Her curled posture evokes the instinct to retreat inward when life becomes overwhelming, but she isn’t hiding. She’s offering herself tenderness, protection and presence.

Like a lotus that closes its petals at night, there are times when turning inward is not withdrawal from life. It’s self-care.

The sanctuary isn’t somewhere we have to find outside ourselves.

It lives within.

She is both the seeker and the temple.

Before painting the lotus, I covered the entire drumhead in metallic gold.

That choice became part of the meaning of the piece.

Gold has long represented the sacred, the radiant and the Divine. On a deeper level, I think it can also remind us of something we easily forget: beneath everything we experience, we are light at our core—radiant, whole and pure.

The lotus design grows out of that golden ground, as though the sanctuary within is emerging from an underlying field of light.

The result is especially luminous in person. Parts of the petals are painted with interference colours that magically change with the light. In some settings they appear soft and almost matte; move around and they suddenly shimmer with an unexpected iridescence.

It gives the lotus a quality that feels almost alive.

The Inner Sanctum is painted on a 16-inch Remo buffalo-style drum with a Fiberskyn drumhead—durable, responsive and well suited to actual playing, even in high humidity.

But a drum is more than a beautiful surface.

It’s an instrument of vibration.

When played, its deep resonance can be felt as much as heard, travelling through the body, mind and spirit and inviting us to slow down, breathe, listen and come back to centre.

The Inner Sanctum Drum is a visual and vibrational prayer for reconnecting with the sanctuary within—a place of stillness, wholeness and love.
